THE PANTHER STRUT!

I played drums in the Camden High Band (Marching Panthers) from my freshman through my senior years (1975-79). The Marching Panther Band, Drill Team, and Color Guards were awesome...we had discipline as well as flair! The band was "full of talent". Not only could we play, we also looked good and danced well. We dazzled the crowd with the Panther Strut during our halftime show! Our homecoming half time shows (electric shows) featured the band, and groups from the music label "The Sound of Philadelphia" (TSOP) such as Sister Sledge, and "Ray, Goodman, and Brown". Folks from all over South Jersey, and Penns came to see. Give credit to Ms. Carol Austin who was our band teacher...She whipped us into shape, and it wasn't easy! I still remember endless hours of marching in the park at practice after school, sometimes until the lights came on. But on Saturday, when the whistle blew.....we were ready..GAME ON! In 1977, the "Marching Panthers represented the city of Camden as we marched in 2 parades at the Mardi Gras in New Orleans. I can still hear the folks saying "Looking good Camden!" We were regulars at the Sixers game, and played at the Phillies game at Veteran's Stadium. However, on the flipside, we could also deliver a soothing sound playing classical and jazz during our concert season. The band was an integral part of the community. Thanks to the support of everyone in the community for such a fantastic experience during that time. Keep up the tradition!!!!
