Whisteling in halls

It was early June, 1963, the senior classs had just been to the auditorium to practice graduation exercises. I was walking down the hall in the NEW part of CHS and whisteling the graduation march out loud and Dr. Kopenhaver, the principal stopped me to ask what I was doing, I told him I was whisteling. He said "do you know that is not acceptable in our halls?", I told "him no one ever told me I couldn't do it". He got mad and told me "to go to the office". (I had never been to the office before). When he got there he told me "to just sit there while he finds my records, and he will deal with me then" I sat in the office for about 30 minutes almost in tears, expecting him to expel me or not let me graduate. He had a way to intimidate the students just by his manners. He finally called me into his office and talked to me, realizing that I had never been in trouble; or at least got caught; and talked to me about respect for the principal. I think that was a good thing for me, because when I became a principal 30 years later I remembered that incident and tried to see the student's side of things when I delt with them. Funny how times have changed.
